PhD Graduate Student in Machine Learning and Hurricane Prediction
Department: School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Georgia Tech
Description:
The Climate Risk & Extreme Dynamics Group in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking one exceptional PhD student to advance the scientific understanding of risks associated with climate extremes through pioneering research. This work emphasizes the integration of physics-based modeling with state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to develop innovative solutions for predicting and mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events. The successful candidate will contribute to a SANDIA National Laboratories-funded project, focused on improving multiple-hazard hurricane predictions using physics-informed deep learning models. This interdisciplinary research combines advanced theoretical approaches with machine learning innovations to tackle the growing challenges posed by these climate extremes.
Research within the group integrates observational analysis, numerical modeling, and the application of physics-informed machine learning and data mining techniques. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply these methodologies, with a particular focus on advancing physics-informed deep learning models for hurricane predictions. Candidates will also be encouraged to develop and pursue their own research interests, fostering intellectual independence and innovation. Additionally, there may be opportunities to spend one or two semesters as interns at SANDIA National Laboratories, leveraging SANDIA’s state-of-the-art research facilities, expanding their investigations, and collaborating with leading scientists to build a robust professional network in the field.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Ali Sarhadi, conducting original research, writing manuscripts for publication, presenting findings at professional conferences, and collaborating with faculty and fellow graduate students at Georgia Tech. Furthermore, candidates will have the opportunity to pursue a dual degree with other departments, enhancing their interdisciplinary research experience and academic development.
Qualifications:
Open to graduating master’s students and senior undergraduate students (at Georgia Tech) with a background in computer science, computational science and engineering, engineering, physics, or mathematics. Students in computer science with a strong motivation to work on climate change impact research are especially encouraged to apply.
Strong programming skills in Python, with demonstrated experience in advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques, including generative AI models, Transformers, graphical neural networks, and reinforcement learning. Extensive experience applying these techniques to real-world problems is essential.
Solid understanding of, and the ability to analyze large datasets.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Availability to start in fall 2025 semester.

Hours: Required to work select Saturdays each month; hours vary by program track.

Position Summary:
The CEISMC Expanded Learning Programs (ELP) team is seeking enthusiastic and committed Georgia Tech students to serve as Group Leaders/Tutors for our Saturday programs. Group Leaders provide academic support, facilitate engaging STEM activities, and serve as positive role models for K–12 students. This role offers hands-on experience in educational outreach, tutoring, and program facilitation.
Responsibilities:
Tutor K–12 students in math and other subject areas as needed.
Facilitate or assist with hands-on STEM activities.
Provide supervision, encouragement, and guidance to participants.
Assist with program setup, cleanup, and material organization.
Collaborate with other team members to ensure the smooth operation of the program.
Participate in professional learning sessions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current Georgia Tech student in good academic standing.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with K–12 students.
Reliability and punctuality for scheduled sessions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with youth in educational or mentoring settings.

Position Summary:
The Office Assistant supports the CEISMC Expanded Learning Programs (ELP) team in delivering high-quality K–12 afterschool, weekend, and summer programs. The role includes a variety of administrative responsibilities to ensure smooth program operations and is ideal for Georgia Tech students seeking professional experience in office administration and educational outreach.
Responsibilities:
Provide general administrative support, including data entry, phone calls, email correspondence, and document preparation.
Assist with the preparation, setup, and breakdown of program activities and events.
Organize supplies and update inventory tracking systems.
Assist in communications with program participants, families, and partners.
Provide on-site support during select Saturday program sessions.
Assist the Executive Assistant with compliance tasks, as needed.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of office and program spaces, ensuring materials and equipment are properly stored and work areas remain tidy.
Learn and utilize administrative tools, including Outlook, Ideal Logic, Airtable, and Google Suite, to complete assigned tasks.
Complete other duties as assigned to support program success.
Training & Tools:
Training provided in Ideal Logic for registration emails and verifications.
Administrative tasks are performed using Outlook, Airtable, Google Suite, and other related platforms.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current Georgia Tech student in good academic standing.

CEISMC Communications Student Assistant
The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) is seeking a talented student to assist the Communications Team with marketing and communications projects that raise the visibility of the Talent Development Program and other related CEISMC programs. The Talent Development Program at Georgia Tech is a multi-year initiative supporting the Institute's strategic plan by providing middle and high school students with opportunities to access a rigorous advanced STEM curriculum. This is an opportunity for the student to grow a professional portfolio with hands-on graphic design, marketing and communications experience.
CEISMC is seeking to hire a detail-oriented student with strong interpersonal skills who will show initiative, a strong work ethic, organization, and positivity as well as the ability to work professionally and independently with appropriate direction. This role is ideal for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience in digital marketing, graphic design, and communications within an educational and outreach-focused environment.
IMPACT & INFLUENCE:
The student assistant will interact primarily with CEISMC faculty, staff, students, and occasionally with participants in CEISMC programming, depending on the nature of the task.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Assist in the creation and design of marketing materials including newsletters, flyers, brochures, social media graphics and promotional content.
- Support photography needs for events and programs, including capturing high-quality photos and organizing/editing images for use in marketing materials.
- This includes event photography support on Saturdays as needed
- Collaborate with staff to ensure consistent branding and messaging across all materials.
- Help maintain and update web content related to the Talent Development Program (optional based on experience).
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute creative ideas for outreach and engagement.
- Creating graphics for marketing materials and web.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:
CEISMC is seeking a Georgia Tech undergraduate in good academic standing, preferably majoring in Communications, Business, Computational Media Computing and Media, or Digital Media with experience in basic graphic design, photography, and videography.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS:
Specialized skills required for this job:
- Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), or similar.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Basic photography skills and familiarity with photo editing software.
- Interest or experience in web design is a plus but not required.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
